What are the different types of extensions we do at The Building Company?

Side Extension

Sometimes called a side return extension, this is the most common kitchen extension and are very popular in Victorian Houses.A side return generally involves building out to the side of the property and finishing flush at the back of the main part of the house. You can then choose to have either a pitched or flat roof over the extended section.

Rear extension

A rear extension is where only the end of the property is extended. This gives you the opportunity to have a huge roof windows to allow maximum natural light into the newly created space. Also the opportunity to have Bifold doors that can fill the width of the extension for the ultimate indoor/outdoor living experience. With Rear extensions can have either have a Monopitch roof, Centre pitched roof or a flat roof.

L-shaped/wrap around extension

An l-shaped, or wrap around, kitchen extension is where the extension not only goes into the side addition but also wraps around the back extending sometimes three or four meters into the garden which can provide a huge kitchen living area looking out onto the garden.

Detailled below is a sample walk-through of a home extension project.

Although each extension is different these are the steps we tend to follow.

Throughout the project Anthony, our project manager with over 20years experience, will be on hand to answer any questions and if not on-site with you he is available by phone during business hours.

Step 1

Gain access to site and install all necessary site protection to areas worked in ad access areas.

Step 2

Mark out foundations and excavate foundations to a depth of 1000mm below average ground level all waste to be removed by skip/muck away vehicles ( building control, or the architect may ask for the foundations to be dug to a different depth at this point)

Step 3

Pour foundations with C20 grade concrete to within 250mm ground level any drainage passing through foundations to be bridged over in conventional manner, with pre-cast lintels and pea shingle back fill.

Step 4

At this point is any drainage needs to be altered this is when it happens

Step 5

Take walls to DPC level using concrete blocks/footing bricks. DPC to be consistent with existing property

Step 6

Form hardcore base for extension floor, cover with sharp sand blinding, then a 1200 gauge membrane is to be fitted.

Step 7

We then insulate the floor area and pour the concrete base

Step 9

A wall plate is then fitted ready to take the roof joists and the roof is built.

Step 10

Any doors or windows are now fitted to make secure and ready for the knock through (if one is needed).
Knock through existing wall to create an open space into the new extension.

Step 11

Any internal walls are now built
